Valentino is that rare combination, a lazy but enthusiastic malinois who can lie around and snuggle or join in a wild rumble with glee. When you meet him you might first notice that his ears and legs go on for miles. Then you'd notice that he has the kindest eyes, begging you to let him climb into your lap. Whether you are romping or enjoying a Netflix binge, Valentino just wants to be with you for all your adventures. If he were human you'd find him working in the bike repair shop at REI, taking breaks to stretch out those long legs but coming back soon to chat up the patrons and scarf up some snacks.

Just about everyone might be included in his social sphere. He's cautious with people at first, but warms up quickly. It's the same with cows, chickens, alpacas, and pigs: at first he's a little nervous, but he relaxes quickly if you reassure him. The only cat he's met attracts his attention, but he does not try to chase it. Dogs really attract his attention, as he'd love to play, but he has a high EQ and pays attention to whatever they are trying to tell him. He even liked the vet. Whatever scares him now might be fine next week, as he is more and more calm each time he's introduced to new things.

If you want to have a good laugh, Valentino would be happy to oblige. He'll gladly help you harvest your carrots, searching out all the ones you miss. The only problem is that he gobbles up all the ones he finds. If you turn your attention to something else, there's a good chance you might get a gentle nip on your behind to remind you of what's important. And good luck if you don't allow pets on the furniture. Valentino will put his head on your lap, and then one paw, and then ... pretty soon he is still technically grounded, with one paw on the floor, but the rest of himself in your lap.

For all his social skills and easygoing nature, Valentino is a shy fellow, and would do best with a gentle but firm special person. Loud noises such as storms, winds, or chainsaws worry him, although he soothes himself by going to his kennel instead of going into melt-down. He has a soft mouth and doesn't destroy things, staying occupied for hours instead with a Kong filled with peanut butter or a puzzle ball. He does still urinate in the house once in a great while if he's not taken out every few hours, unfortunately preferring carpet to any easier-to-clean surface. In general, though, he's easy to correct and has very few bad habits.

Although he settles well, Valentino does like to be active, and he would love a home with another dog to play with. He hasn't been tested with kids but would likely be fine with them. Herding might be a special talent, as he tends to herd naturally and nip gently to get others to run while he plays. He also loves sniffing and water, and might excel in nosework or dock-diving. But most of all he'd just like to be there by your side, whatever you do.
